We all know that Google has a complex algorithm with hidden criteria which enables the search engines to evaluate websites and rank them in order by relevance. Google has an image of how a relevant website should look and be like and it simply ranks high the closest matches.

Google uses programs called spiders that will crawl from website to website via hyperlinks collecting information. Then it evaluates the gathered data and decides if it is relevant enough to to place it in its search results and, if so, where.

It gives scores to all the websites (all the sites that are indexed, other words all the sites Google knows about) and the higher the score the higher the rankings.

Your websites scores based on how relevant your domain (URL),the title of your site, the categories, keywords, meta title, meta description, meta tags….etc. to a given search, where the incoming links coming from, what the anchor text say…etc

These are some of the factors that we (anybody who is in the SEO business) know about. But of course there is a lot more to it, however Google’s engineers don’t want you to know about how to “manipulate” completely and dominate ultimately the search engines.

The most legit way to Google’s heart and eventually end up in the top of the search engine is being relevant. (No shit, Akos!) I know it’s not really an advice but don’t forget Google is the most popular search engine and its success is based on “relevance”. If you play the SEO game by Google’s rules and guidelines you will achieve top positions. But having said that keep in mind the SEO is a slow burn. It takes constants work.

One of the major deciding factor that Google uses to determine rank position is inbound linking (links pointing to your website from other websites). But these incoming links are weighted differently by Google’s search engine. The best links should be coming from sites that are relevant to your website, also important the page rank of that site (the higher its page rank the more the link worth), also it’s also critical how many link coming from that page. (the less links coming (and one of them is pointing to you) the better.

Picture this:

You are selling books on your website. Oprah writes a short article about why reading is important and decides to put up a link with relevant anchor text pointing to your website. How much do you think that link worth (to you) ??? A LOT!!!

If you want to rank high in the search engines I advise you to pick a topic that makes your heart sing and write about it in your blog. Be the best in that niche. Don’t try to struggle your way up on the top of the search engine. If you are passionate about what you write the results will follow; it cannot be otherwise. What do you think “Organic” search results stand for anyway??? Of course, implementing SEO is crucial but the main thing to keep your blog focused on its objective. Which is GIVE value. You gotta give before you can have. Period.

The term “search engine” has become the predominant term for “search system” or “search site”, but these terms mean different things.

Search Engines

Big search-index companies (Google) own tens of thousands of computers that use software ( spiders, robots) to grab web pages and analyze the information stored in them. They use complex algorithms to index that information and rank it in order based on relevance of a given search term. This is what’s called the “search results”.

A search directory is a categorized collection of information about web sites instead of containing information from web pages.

The biggest directories are owned by Yahoo! (dir.yahoo.com) and the Open Directory Project (www.dmoz.org). Search directories do not use spiders to index pages on the web sites in the directory; instead, for each site, the directory contains information such as a title and description submitted by the owner of the site. (Submitting your website URL should be one of your SEO tactics; as discussed in earlier posts on AkosFintor.com)

Bigger directories have staff members who overview your site ( making sure your web site is legit and submitted in the right catergory). Smaller directories often accept sites based on the owner’s submission with little verification.

Search Sites

These sites let you search through some kind of indexes or directory of web sites or both. A search site may not actually own a search index. For instance Google is a search site and a search engine. However AOL.com or EarthLink.com are search sites but powered by Google’s search index.

Open Directory Project is a search directory that partnered up with AOL’s search site which is powered by Google’s search engine.

Just 2 days before Kimball Roundy’s Speedfollo Twitter System was about to launch I had decided to promote it because it’s affiliate program seemed promising.

I wanted to do it right, so I decided to get top rankings on Google’s search engine.

2 days later when Speedfollo was launched I got the top rankings I had wished for, bringing me a good number of referrals. How I Did It?!

Step 1

I went on the official site of SpeedFollo.ws and learned about the new system, taking notes of the keywords referring to SpeedFollo.

Step 2

I made a 1 minute video talking about SpeedFollo and posted it on YouTube and DailyMotion using a TubeMogul. I attached a very detailed description full of keywords to the videos. The first thing you need to include in your description is the URL (it should be clickable) of your website (more importantly the relevant page of your website, or blog category.) This is the page you want to rank high. Generally speaking, you want every single link that you put out to point to that page or category that you dedicate to the affiliate program, or service that you are trying to promote!

Step 3

On day 1 I set up 2 free blogs at Wordpress.com and Blogger.com. I posted a UNIQUE article about Speedfollo at each of them. There again, I sprinkled keywords all over the post. (Your post has to be readable providing useful information about whatever you are trying to promote. Don’t be spammy, and avoid anchor texts such as “Learn more here”. That doesn’t say anything to the search engines.) Use keywords in your anchor text! You may use 2-3 anchor texts per blog post. (I usually use one anchor in every 200-300 words.)

On day 2 I repeated the process.

Step 4

I linked all my social sites to my “Speedfollo.ws” category of my blog.

That’s it.

Remember to implement all the steps exactly as described.

Hint:

Try to capitalize on a service or product that is not available yet. If there is only a buzz (not much competition SEO wise) about it on the net, chances are that you will be able to get nice rankings for those particular keywords.

Some of you asked me how to do linking in your post.
Here it is:

Step 1
You highlight whatever text you want to be your anchor text.

Step 2
Click on the icon that represents  insert/edit link.( see screen shot below! )

Step 3

Small window pops up asking you what your link URL is going to be. This URL should point to another site or post of yours if you want intralinking (within your website). After the link is in, hit insert and you’re done.
